One of the first Chanel fashion shows to make use of the extraordinary space of the Grand Palais, Paris, was a French garden: abstract, black and white—and a mere 30 to 40 centimeters in height. The floor of this palace of steel and glass was entirely covered with powdered white Carrara marble, on which floated black parterres. This elaborate landscape, set so low beneath the 45-metre-high cupola to accent the emptiness above the moving silhouettes of the models, enveloped them in all the grandeur of which this unique building is capable, its exaggerated, enchanting verticality. From 2006 to 2019, the Grand Palais served as the stage for Karl Lagerfeld’s shows for Chanel; its emptiness a gateway to exultation for him. In this book—the first to explore the architecture of the Chanel shows—architect Florent Verdes has selected 30 set designs which reveal how architecture was at the core of Lagerfeld’s creative process during these years. The Architecture of the Chanel Shows teems with images—sketches, photographs of 3D-models and the sets, architectural drawings, archival documents and more. Yet it is also a book of words, in which Lagerfeld engages in an imaginary dialogue with Le Corbusier and explains the origin and development of his ideas, ultimately revealing the existence of a hitherto hidden and elusive stage designer: Stefan Lubrina.
