"An incredibly intricate story!!"
4 stars"

This is a very complex story – one that took me several times of watching this, to grasp. It's very artistic and very heavily scripted – it's definitely not a puff piece. I was surprised by that – but this movie was my first real introduction to European cinema. It features the ever beautiful Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassell, and a very mixed up love triangle. It has an ending you just don't see coming either – you won't guess it! Heart-breaking, sweet – and a bit of a thriller too!

Description

The Apartment (l'appartement)

Fusing atmospheric street scenes, a beautiful Parisian appartment, and chic cafes with unpredictable plot twists and pungent symbolism, ‘L'Appartement’ glides through time, nonchalantly entwining its hero Max around the passion driven fates of three beautiful women.

Juggling the order of events, ‘L'Appartement’ playfully ties its lovelorn characters in knots as the heady plot pulses along its giddy conclusion.Simply exuding confidence from the word go, “L'Appartement” is a stylish and sexy combination of love story and thriller in which man is caught up in the passion driven fates of three beautiful women. Max, the romantic protaganist, is planning a marriage, investigating a murder, chasing after a lost love and getting bizarrely entangled with a mystery girl.

Switching between time, women, chic cafes and beautiful Parisian apartments, Mimouni's film makes the most of its deliriously romantic setting whilst effortlessly unravelling an intricate and unpredictable plot which playfully ties its lovelorn characters up in knots as it races along to a heady conclusion.

Best Picture BAFTA Winner 1998.
