Description

This book offers an introduction to the ancient novel, presenting the texts in chronological order with, in each case, a summary of their contents, relevant background information and interpretative pointers. The English translation represents a revised version of the original German edition and thus includes the findings of the more recent studies on the subject. The generic label ancient novel' is attached in this book only to the idealistic and comic-realistic novels with their central themes of love and adventure. The first two chapters are devoted to a definition of the genre, to a clear distiction between the above-mentioned texts and other novel-like literature of antiquity, and to an attempted explanation for the use of this literary form during the Hellensitic period. The three remaining chapters discuss the extant novel texts in chronological order. The book is the first English monograph on the ancient novel to offer a survey which continues in concise form an introduction to the genre with a presentation of research findings in the field. Readers are thus provided with the basic information necessary to familiarize themselves quickly with the subject, and with as comprehensive a view as possible of the genre and its numerous exponents.
