Description

1926. Contains Dreamland and other Poems, The American Bison, Through the Mackenzie Basin, Memoirs and Reminiscences. From the cover: Few men were so closely associated with the later history of the West as Charles Mair. He served in both campaigns against Riel. During the first uprising he was captured, condemned to death, and escaped. He was secretary to the Scrip Commission that went into the Mackenzie Basin in 1899 to treat with the Indians for a tract of territory, and his narrative of this Expedition had a distinct influence in attracting settlers to the Athabasca and Peace River Districts. The treatise on the Bison in North American read before the Royal Society of Canada is one of the most valuable contributions to the study of these almost extinct animals. Mair is considered by many to be the greatest Poet of Canada.
