RALPH G. BROCKETT is professor and interim head in theDepartment of Educational Psychology and Counseling at theUniversity of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is the author of numerousbooks on adult education, including The Profession and Practiceof Adult Education with Sharan B. Merriam, which won the HouleAward for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education. He has servedas editor-in-chief of New Directions for Adult and ContinuingEducation, coeditor of Adult Learning, and on theeditorial boards of Adult Education Quarterly and theInternational Journal of Self-Directed Learning. He is amember of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall ofFame.
