Description

The Tao Te Ching is both philosophic discourse and poetic expression and so not only represents universal concepts and abstract ideas in logical relation but also presents unique perceptions and vivid impressions in simile and metaphor. It is also both political in thought and religious in feeling and so not only creates a model of leadership and social responsibility for the community but also instills a spirit of service and obedience as well as a long-lasting view of the way in the individual. It does all this by attempting to show the good of living in accord with nature and by trying to develop a greater awareness of its unseen agency in man. However, ultimately unable to be shown to another either through the transcendent form of a concept or the rational structure of thought the way can only reveal itself in the hidden accord that exists between a still mind and a soft and supple spirit and the abiding forms and transforming presence of nature. And so expressible as neither idea nor word and identifiable as neither a developed trait of character nor the preconceived intention or desired consequence of an action, it leads to an intuitive understanding of nature, a deep identification with it and an increased awareness of an order, purpose and providence at work within it, thereby guiding man in making choices in life and bringing him into ever greater accord with his fellows and his environment. Accordingly, a spirit of patience and moderation, honesty and integrity, self-control and self-sacrifice as well as humility and respect for all living things forms the ground from which it arises. Thus in following the way a man or woman embraces the one and becomes both a sage and living model for others while passing quietly through the world, sharing the benefits of freedom and love and enjoying the blessings of long-lasting life.
