1901. Krapp edited these works to be used as a classroom text. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. The Sketch Book appeared serially in New York and includes the widely renowned stories of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Tales of a Traveler, is a collection of tales written after visits to Germany and France. The four parts of Tales include: Strange Stories by a Nervous Gentlemen; Buckthorne and His Friends; The Italian Banditti; and The Money-Diggers.
