Author Biography:

Janja Lalich, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Sociology and Founder and CEO of the Lalich Center on Cults and Coercion. She has been studying cults and extremism since the late 1980s and has presented at both domestic and international conferences, as well as for intelligence organizations in the U.S. and elsewhere. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her work for and with survivors, families, and professionals and has been an expert witness in both criminal and civil cases. She is author of Bounded Choice: True Believers and Charismatic Cults; Escaping Utopia: Growing Up in a Cult, Getting Out, and Starting Over (coauthor Karla McLaren); coauthor with late clinical psychologist Dr. Margaret Thaler Singer of "Crazy" Therapies: What Are They? Do They Work? and Cults in Our Midst: The Hidden Menace in Our Everyday Lives; and Guest Editor of "Special Issue: Women Under the Influence" (Cultic Studies Journal, Vol. 14, No. 1, 1997).
