She breeds registered Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats that are hand raised and are as loving and sweet as puppy dogs. Their farm menagerie also includes chickens, cats, Holland Lop bunnies and a beloved farm dog named Annie, who is the star of another one of Valerie's books The Adventures of Sweet Meadows Farm: Annie the Farm Dog Helps Out.
