This latest offering encapsulates a unique hybrid of approaches into an all original 9 track album which unifies New Orleans style clave rhythms, hard-bop ‘Coltrane changes’, Boogaloo grooves reminiscent of Lee Morgan’s ‘The Sidewinder’ and influences from 70’s funk, surf-rock and Country music’s.
Neil is joined by a stellar cast of musicians from the NZ jazz community that include drummer Ron Samsom, bassist Olivier Holland, Grant Winterburn (keys), Roger Mannins (Baritone Sax) and Lewis McCallum (Alto Sax). Album mixed by Jeremy Toy (She’s So Rad, Leonard Charles)
Over the last two decades Neil has performed with jazz masters such as Michael Brecker, Diane Shuur, Mike Knock and Bennie Maupin along with pop artists that include Tim Finn, Randy Crawford, Anika Moa and more recently Tami Neilson.
In 2001 he released his debut album ‘Unification’ from which the track ‘The Guru’ was released on Kog Transmissions ‘Dub Compilations 3’. Along with his various solo endeavor’s and sideman duties Neil has taught and lectured music at both the New Zealand School of Music and the University of Auckland’s Jazz and Popular Music Programs since 2003.
