I believe Stoked was already the best snowboarding game at the time of its release. This edition isn't a massive improvement upon the original, but it's definitely better on all fronts. The physics were tweaked, the graphics have improved (snow and fog in particular), they introduced park terrain (which was a very welcome addition), two new pros, two new mountains, etc. It's better in every way.
For those not familiar with the original Stoked – it often gets called ‘the snowboarding equivalent of Skate’, which is a positive comparison. Just as Skate is more realistic, doing away with goofy non-skate related goals that filled the cartoon-like Tony Hawk games, Stoked has a great back-to-basics, realistic feel about it. You can still throw stunning tricks off huge drops, but there's no boring filler goals like ‘collecting coins’ like you find in Shaun White's Snowboarding. Stoked also features a similar trick system to Skate – it has a really good feel to it, especially when you pre-wind your spins. It's nice to feel the physics and weight of it all. Even just carving ‘feels’ good.
Each mountain has between 7–12 different sections to it, so it's really like 50+ snowboarding areas in the game. The area you cover is absolutely massive, and each mountain differs greatly from the next. They all have a unique look and style of terrain. On top of that, there is a real-time weather system, and the mountain will have different amounts of snow depending on the weather, which allows for different lines and runs each time you go down.
I'll leave it at that really. Bottom line: Stoked was the best snowboarding game out, and the Big Air edition takes it up a notch. If you already owned Stoked, there might not be enough in this edition to warrant another $40+ purchase – but if you're looking for a snowboarding game, you owe it to yourself to buy this one.
