I have watched all of the Star Trek releases from The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, all ten movies including J J Abrams' three Kirk movies and all 4 seasons of Discovery and it amazes me that in just four short seasons a fantastic franchise like Star Trek can go from good (1) to passable (2) then from bad (3) to worse (4). Season one had a good story although in the ‘The Original Series’ the Enterprise goes to an alternate universe (episode 33: Mirror Mirror) and a couple of episodes have incorporated time travel. I guess travelling into the future a thousand years (3) is novel enough but not very convincing if the only new innovation is programmable matter. The resolution of ‘The Burn’ (3) was disappointing (I still fail to see how a young alien boy screaming after his dead mother could spontaneously detonate all of the dilithium in the quadrant even with the help of a failing computer). Season four however, descends even further into the mire. I couldn't help but notice that the President of the Federation, Navar (the new Vulcan), The General of the military and the President of United Earth, not to mention the Captain of Discovery are all women. The men, it seems, have to be content with roles not much better than glorified extras. Star Trek used to be full of action from fist fights in ‘The Original Series’ to galactic battles with the Klingons, Romulans and The Borg. Season four is reduced to a boring talk-fest, even action spurred on from Booker and Taqar gets talked down (I still can't figure out how Booker's new spore drive can work without any spores, oh well), not reflecting reality when you think of Margaret Thatcher ( she was Great Britain's Prime Minister during the 1980's), her maternal instincts did not stop her sending the Royal Navy to war against Argentina, no talk-fest there, but I digress, and since we are talking about fiction there should have been more action, not less. The disappointing thing is that the story line incorporates a ‘Dark Matter Anomaly’ which, if the screenwriters had have used their imaginations a bit more, could have resulted in an action packed finale, but they didn't so the grand finale fizzled out to extinction and left me rather perplexed wondering how something that had a lot of promise from season one could end up being so lame, even the overt homosexual relationship between the ship's chief engineer and doctor couldn't save this one (it just made the series very ‘woke’). Since they have no where to go now maybe they will just go away. A good example of a lost opportunity.

At the edge of the universe, discovery begins.

Critic Reviews:

  • " After four seasons, Star Trek: Discovery is in uncharted territory but represents the very best ideals that the franchise can offer. " – Danielle Solzman (Solzy at the Movies)
  • " “Discovery” has broached stories about division, war, and strife and now has finally come back to the original vision of the franchise by imbuing a sense of unity, hope, and camaraderie that helps elevate this to be the best season of the show yet. " – Alex Maidy (JoBlo's Movie Network)
  • " Fans might be forgiven for wondering just how many chances Discovery could possibly have to reinvent itself. But judging by Season 4's first episode, the fourth time just might be the charm. " – Lacy Baugher (Den of Geek)
