Description

The seaside town of Southport in the northwest of England attracts many visitors each year. The town was founded in 1792 from a small fishing settlement among the sand-dunes to become a fashionable Lancashire resort and grew rapidly in the 19th century. The town is justly famous for its main thoroughfare Lord Street, an elegant example of Victorian town planning, Royal Birkdale Golf Club with its art deco clubhouse and the country’s second-longest pier, but among its many other fascinating buildings can be found Victorian and Edwardian mansions, an early bath house, a bowling pavilion converted into a library, a tiny round house, the Fog Bell building and a modern and stylish Eco-centre. Southport in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, including less well known buildings tucked away, showing the changes that have taken place over the years and the stories behind them. The book will appeal to all those who live in Southport or visit the town or who have an interest in the area.

Author Biography:

Geoffrey Wright has been a Southport historian for well over 35 years, and has written several books on Southport and elsewhere as well as articles for local newspapers.
