Description

K.M. Go ahead, try to put SON OF THE WOLF down! I didn't lose quite as much sleep reading Heather Adams' 'Son of the Wolf' as I did with the first novel in this four-part saga, 'On Angels Wings' - but that's only because, at 260 pages, it is shorter than the first book. However, I still found myself saying sleepily, "Ok, I just have to read one more chapter to find out what happens next." Ms. Adams is adept at surprising the reader with unexpected plot twists. She makes the growing Enderby family, their friends - and their enemies! - so real as to evoke emotion even on seeing the characters' names. The time period covered in this sequel is narrower; the action is focused on the conflicts that arise not only between the British and the American Colonists, but between Loyalists and Patriots of the Revolutionary War years. Ms. Adams has a real gift for combining historical events and figures (e.g. George Washington, Benedict Arnold) with her vividly portrayed fictional characters. In just a few sentences she brings each scene to life with her descriptions, whether of the action on a pirate ship, the danger of a spy mission, or the everyday chores and challenges of life in a colonial homestead. If you haven't read 'On Angels Wings', you will find that Ms. Adams does a good job of filling in enough background for you to get a sense of events and people who were important in that first book. If you do read 'Son of the Wolf' first, I guarantee you will end up with a desire to go back and see what you missed in 'On Angels Wings'. Personally I enjoy reading from a physical book, . I hope her work also becomes available as a series of movies. Reading her writing is like watching a movie in your head - but it would be fun to see it on the big screen!
