Self-identified as bisexual at age 14 as result of what were my sexual development behaviors from ages 8-14, the 40 years ensuing were riddled with internal conflict and resulting decision-making and behavior best described as risky, reckless, and unstable reflecting a continued strife to live my truth as it battled denial. "Coming out" as gay at age 26 seemed reasonable being that I was living with and in a long term relationship with another man. Announcing my engagement and impending wedding at age 34 to "the women who is my best friend and soul mate" brought confusion; family and friends rationalized the actions and decisions of a genuinely "bisexual" guy. The self-determined "turmoil" that was my life had most to do with attempts to "fit into the dichotomy of heterosexuality-homosexuality" with the additional challenge of bisexuality being dismissed as a "cop out" or "transitioning phase." Believing, not knowing, the truth; which was more not embracing the truth, I sought normalcy through succumbing to societal pressures and expectations. This "conformity" was the foundation for decades of "anything but normal." What I have now discovered is that my sexuality was normal; it was and is my normal; and my truth. What I needed to do and should have done was live my truth. Now I understand and embrace that I am "Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual." This is a place along the sexual continuum that is human sexuality; my sexuality.
