Description

This is a concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to 2- and 4-nitrophenol. These isomers are used as intermediates in the synthesis of a number of organophosphorous pesticides and some medical products. Given the multiplicity of drugs used to treat HIV, the potential risk of cancer from anti-viral, and antiretroviral drugs is still at present unclear, though multi-drug therapy has proved successful in helping AIDS patients. A working group of 17 experts from eight countries met to examine data on the antiretroviral agent, Zidovudine (AZT), presently been given to HIV-pregnant women, and which has been found through some tests to produce cancer in mice. Various other drugs were evaluated, including, Etoposide and Teniposide, which was assessed as being probably carcinogenic, and Mitoxantrone, Amsacrine, Zidovudine, Zilcitabine, Phenolphthalein classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans
