Author Biography:

Irwin Garfinkel is Mitchell I. Ginsberg Professor of Contemporary Urban Problems at Columbia University School of Social Work and author of "Assuring Child Support" (Russell Sage Foundation, 1992). Jennifer L. Hochschild is professor of politics and public affairs at Princeton University and the author of Facing Up to the American Dream: Race, Class, and the Soul of the Nation (Princeton, 1995). Sara McLanahan is professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University, where she is also director of the Center for Research on Child Wellbeing. She is coauthor of "Growing Up with a Single Parent" (Harvard, 1994).
