Description

1861. Catholic (at once) and Protestant, stable and progressive: two letters of points of present interest, addressed to the Rev. W.B. Bryan, Rector of Rodington and the Hon. Colin Lindsay. My object in these two Letters has been to suggest a governing principle, a law, native to a region superior to that of ordinary polemics, and which by its simplicity and universality may obviate the necessity, to those who recognize it, of volumes of argument on the secondary and derivative relations of the respective subjects. The moral of both Letters, and more especially of the second, is caution, the grand desideratum in these days of transition; when, through partial judgment and imprudent legislation, we are in danger of taking steps which, once made, can never be retraced.
