A theft in the museum takes Hunter and Alex to Haiti, to investigate the deceased, Priestess Lovelie. Deep in Voodoo country they take precautions, but when they obtain a priceless opal, amulet they learn there are more powers at play than they realized. Hunter's nightmares lead him to Portland, Oregon, to investigate the Shanghai Tunnels under the city. Some 1,500 or more men are said to have been abducted annually, to work as slaves on the ships. Tours are currently conducted on a regular basis. Although the history of these tunnels is real, the story of Mary and Billy is fictitious. While investigating the tunnels, Alex, befriends Mary, a spirit who died searching for her fiancé, who was taken captive on a slave ship in 1850. Mary wants to go into the white light but refuses to go until she can learn what happened to Billy before she goes. Alex vows to find out what happened to Billy for her so that she can move on. We learn of Billy's capture, and struggle to return to Mary. Alex and Hunter solve the mystery of Billy's gold, and fight greedy outsiders, to deliver it to his heirs. The greedy swear to get even, and there seems to be no end to the twists and turns this romantic story takes you on.
