Description

This classic of sheep farming discusses the breeding, raising and care of sheep and ewes, and how to combat the common diseases and problems that flocks encounter. The author begins by identifying the various breeds of sheep, and their strengths and weaknesses. Writing in Britain at the turn of the 20th century, Jenner-Fust was a man experienced with farming and raising of livestock. He discusses how certain breeds of sheep are susceptible to disease, while others do better on rough and hilly terrain. Some breeds are very placid and calm in temperament, whether alone or in flocks, whilst others will only respond and obey a herder who is trained in their management. Certain aspects of raising sheep are universal: the birthing and weaning of lambs being one such process. Through experience, the author realized that certain foods and environmental improvements makes ewes relax during the process of giving birth to lambs. Tending to the newborn lambs and their mothers, whose bodies are frequently inflamed after delivery, is vital - some ewes, when left untended and in discomfort, will refuse to feed their young. Overall, Jenner-Fust offers an insightful and informative look at sheep farming, his ideas on care and tending informed by years of experience.
