Description

A samurai fights for honor and survival in a real-life Game of Thrones. Stirring narrative nonfiction recounts the rise of Minamoto Yoshitsune from seemingly doomed infant to immortal warrior-hero (and one of the most famous samurai in Japanese history). Acclaimed author Pamela S. Turner delivers all the drama, romance, and tragedy of the original story--with delightfully dry wit and a healthy dose of modern perspective. Gorgeous ink paintings by celebrated graphic-novelist Gareth Hinds complete this irresistible package.

Author Biography:

Pamela S. Turner is the author of several award-winning books for young readers, including Life on Earth--and Beyond, The Dolphins of Shark Bay (HMH), Crow Smarts (HMH), and the Orbis Pictus Honor Book The Frog Scientist (HMH). Pamela first encountered Minamoto Yoshitsune's story while living in Japan. She now lives in Oakland, California, where she is a black-belt practitioner of kendo, the way of the sword. Gareth Hinds is a third-degree black belt in aikido and the creator of highly acclaimed graphic-novel adaptions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, and other classics (Candlewick). While in college, Gareth made artwork inspried by legends about Yoshitsune, and is thrilled to return to twelfth century Japan in Samurai Rising. Gareth lives in Washington, DC. www.garethhinds.com
