Sails of Glory – HMS Malta 1800 / HMS Tonnant 1798
The Tonnant class was a group of eight 80– gun third rates, designed for French Navy by Jacques–Noël Sané. These powerful ships of the line had a designed crew of around 780, and they were armed with 30 32–Pounder guns in the lowerdeck, 30 24–Pounder guns in the upperdeck, 18 24–Pounder guns in the quarterdeck, 2 12–Pounder guns in the forecastle.
HMS Malta previously served with the French Navy as the “Guillaume Tell”, until she was captured in the Mediterranean Sea by the British Navy during the blockade of Malta. As Guillaume Tell, she took part in the Battle of the Nile, becoming one of only two French ships to escape the destruction of the fleet, and took refuge at Malta, where was captured. After her capture, she sailed in the British Navy for 40 years, with missions in the Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
