Gabriel and his dog, Major, take a winter backpacking trip in the rural Midwest. After experiencing an accident, they find themselves taken into another world by a wondrous people where they come to know the power of the Knowing. When they are returned to this world, they are allowed to retain a secret, the ability to communicate telepathically. Eventually, Tippy, a dog who is a shape shifter, takes Major back to Freedom. Years later Gabriel is also summoned back to Freedom. This time, however, they are faced with an adventure. They must confront a power known as Bondage, who has an insatiable appetite for power. Bondage has become aware of Freedom and has a plan to conquer it. Now, through an accidental encounter with a nuclear submarine, Bondage has a nuclear weapon. Gabriel and Major are on a quest upon which the fate of our world and Freedom rest.
