Description

Reluctant Heroes is a historical novel about mateship. It is the story of Bill McDonald, an Australian soldier in the 2/18 Battalion AIF, who became a Japanese prisoner of war when Singapore fell in 1942. Bill and his mates were sent to Sandakan in Borneo where they struggled to survive starvation and disease. They never gave up in their determination to return to their loved ones. It is also the story of Bill's son Russell, growing up in Armidale, an Australian rural town, while his father is away. The book is based on a real family and actual events as well as imagined people and situations.
