The word "cliffhangers" suggests something to do with mountain climbing. It comes from a fiction story in the early 1800s that ended with the protagonist hanging off a cliff. Readers were anxious to know what happened after that. They had to wait until the next edition came out. 1930's short movie serials used this tease of an ending to get fans back to learn if their Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers heroes made it or not.
