Playful Wisdom: American Literature and Ludic Faith, from Walden to Gilead examines how Henry David Thoreau’s thinking about religious “play” created a theological legacy in American literature, one that includes Emily Dickinson, Jack Kerouac, Thomas Merton, Annie Dillard, and Marilynne Robinson.
