But it was admittedly not the normal it of German and French pronunciation. It found its practical counter part in a certain unrounded Welsh and Russian sound which we symbolized as u'. The strong resemblance of these two sounds led us to think that both of them must be essentially based upon the same radical ratio: and in the case of the it vowel we calculated that ratio to be 23. There was no difficulty in doing this, because this n' is a vowel with a tubular porch and therefore lends itself readily to the methods of calculation and experiment which we have hitherto chie y adopted.
