As mentioned by Henk, the light has a manufacturing defect where the outside metal band has a huge gap on one side. Basically it bulges out a bit where the band is joined together. The one I received had the same thing.
Mighty Ape already accepted my return request, when I tried to open up the lamp (of course disconnected from power) to see if I could fix it. It turns out it is possible to twist/turn the lower part a bit and take it off which gives you access to the metal band. I was able to bend it in better shape which means it now looks fairly ok, with almost no bulge.
So, definitely disappointment quality-wise but at least fixable without having to return it. No hassles with Mighty Ape, they were very supporting, and I got to keep it.
