By "phenomenal awareness" philosophers understand feelings such as pain and desire, but also our conscious perceptual experiences. How it is to have such an awareness is something each person can only know from their own experience. The author takes up a critical position towards the claim of many philosophers that the natural sciences can provide an adequate understanding and explanation of phenomenal awareness.
