Description

This compact A level text analyzes the career of Sir Robert Peel in relation to the development of the Conservative Party in the earlier 19th century. It discusses Peel's conception of Conservatism, and his work as Prime Minister. This series provides analyses of complex issues and problems in important A level Modern History topics. Using supporting documents, this book gives students a clear account of historical facts and an understanding of the central themes and differing intepretations. This book examines Peel's career within a wider than usual context; ie British party politics from the 1820s to the 1860s. It also discusses Peel's posthumous influence on party politics and ideas during the generally neglected 1850s and early 1860s, and considers both the development of the Peelites and the Conservative leadership under Derby and Disraeli. The author has written several other books including "The Decline of the Liberal Party 1910-1931", "Gladstone, Disraeli and later Victorian Politics", and "The Rise of the Labour Party".
