Parks and Recreation Season 1 is widely regarded as a poor start to an
otherwise great show. By no means awful, the 5 episode season shows little
potential in its current state (however the show undergoes a massive overhaul
going forward). It is clear that many people behind The Office were trying to
re-capture lightning in a bottle with the workplace mockumentary style, however
with little substance to back it up. First time I watched this was 2016 and
I thought it was so average that I planned to stop watching it. Thankfully the
same day I saw a video titled “Top 10 Terrible Seasons to Amazing Shows”
and whadayaknow, this was on there. I stuck with it and by the time I finished
the show, it was easily one of my favorites. Revisiting the show today brought
some unexpected enjoyment. Because I knew where the show would be going it was
fascinating seeing where all the characters started and how different the show
was back then. I even got a fair few honest chuckles out of it. On it's own,
season 1 is an alright show, sitting somewhere between kinda good and mediocre.
I judge it harshly because of the magnificent standards the rest of the show
holds itself too. It is very tough to recommend to someone that they should
watch Parks and Rec then immediately have to sit through this, but stick with
it. It's short, it gets better and is more enjoyable watching it again and
again after enjoying the full series. First time I watched season 1. 2 stars.
Rewatching it later with friends having seen the complete show. 4 stars for
potential and not being as boring as I remember.
