1873. Two Volumes in One. Hawthorne, who, like Edgar Allan Poe, took a dark view of human nature, was a central figure in the American Renaissance. His best-known works include The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Our Old Home is an account of a journey to England. The existence of Septimius Felton, posthumously published, was not known to any one but Hawthorne himself, until some time after his death, when the manuscript was found among his papers.
