All Music Guide described Mahal as “One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, the singer/multiinstrumentalist playing an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues”. He first came to prominence in the mid-60s as a founding member of the legendary Rising Sons alongside Ry Cooder, before striking out on his own with a string of successful albums for Columbia. He continued to broaden his approach by taking in folk and roots music influences from around the world
