This is a long book for a Penguin, but it was surprisingly enjoyable. I only got it as a bit of a punt as it was on special, but I'm glad I did. The plot and story is pretty basic, possibly even repetitive in parts, but it's a nice easy read, with some unusual characters and the time frame does indeed span 100 years. It is translated extremely well from the original Spanish, and it was quite interesting to read a story from a different cultural point of view.

More lucidity, wit, wisdom, and poetry than is expected from 100 years of novelists, let alone one man." -- Washington Post Book World, "The first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race." -- William Kennedy, New York Times Book Review

One Hundred Years of Solitude tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Inventive, amusing, magnetic, sad, and alive with unforgettable men and women -- brimming with truth, compassion, and a lyrical magic that strikes the soul -- this novel is a masterpiece in the art of fiction.
