The book includes an introduction to the casual ward by Peter Higginbotham, a well-known author and researcher on the the workhouse system.

Author Biography:

Peter Higginbotham is a longstanding researcher and author on the workhouse and related institutions. As well as books such as 'The Workhouse Encyclopedia', 'Voices from the Workhouse' and 'A Grim Almanac of the Workhouse', he is the author of the highly regarded website workhouses.org.uk. He has also contributed to TV programmes such as 'Who Do You Think You Are?' and '"Heir Hunters'.
