Description

In times of crisis, like the Covid-19 pandemic, nurse leaders must act immediately but also effectively. Previous disasters, emergencies, and healthcare concerns have taught us distinct lessons and forced managers to adapt, but how do you become a successful leader while battling an extreme crisis that brings new and fluctuating information every day? Nursing Leadership During Crisis guides nurse leaders from the Covid-19 pandemic to a mature perspective, integrating theoretical frameworks, ideals, processes, and reflections from those on the front lines. Drawing upon insights learned from the Covid crisis, authors Carolyn Miller Reilly, Barbara Kaplan, and Tim Porter-O'Grady provide a map of tools for a lifelong journey of development and assimilation of attitudes, skills, and behaviors to help readers establish their own leadership persona and better prepare them for future crises.

Author Biography:

CAROLYN MILLER REILLY, PHD, RN, CHFN, CNE, FAHA, FAAN, has devoted more than 30 years to caring for critically ill and cardiovascular patients, primarily as a clinical nurse specialist. It is from this point of reference that she teaches anything cardiac or vaguely related to hemodynamics. Most of Reilly's clinical research centers on promoting self-care in persons suffering from or at risk for cardiovascular disease, including several studies managing self-care and symptoms in persons with heart failure and others in preventing heart disease in cancer survivors. Reilly also has a strong leadership background, serving as a program director in both clinical and academic settings and holding executive leadership appointments in various professional organizations. She has led the Leadership Scholars Program at Emory University since its inception, has previously conducted nursing workforce retention research, is well-published, has served on national writing groups, and serves with editorial boards for several cardiovascular and critical care journals. She recently moved to Berry College in Mt. Berry, Georgia, to lead the Division of Nursing. She is devoted to her children, husband, church, and community and can often be found cheering on her teenagers at sporting events, singing in the church choir, whipping up gourmet meals and drinks, or traveling to experience new cultures and learn new recipes. Barbara Kaplan, MSN, RN, is currently an Instructor at the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and the Co-Director of the Veteran Affairs Nursing Academic Partnership program. Over her 41-year career, Kaplan's focus has been on undergraduate teaching, inclusive of the faculty team for the Leadership Scholars Program and mentoring of student projects within this course and other clinical courses. As one of the founders of the multifaceted simulation lab at Emory University, she served as the Lab Coordinator for many years, where her expertise lies in simulation design, implementation and evaluation, lab schematics, and faculty consultation. Kaplan has led simulation workshops at the international level, training students, interprofessional teams, and healthcare practitioners. She has presented, published, and received accolades for simulation and nursing education. She loves outdoors activities, travel, knitting, and beaming over her grandchildren. TIM PORTER-O'GRADY, DM, EDD, SCD(H), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS, has been a nurse for 50 years.
