Description

Niamh is a young Irish woman in her early twenties who leaves Belfast, Northern Ireland to escape the political unrest there. Niamh's father had been murdered by U.V.F. militants (Loyalists) when she was sixteen years old. She was with her father when he took his last breath, and since then she has been unable to find internal peace. While in America, Niamh pursues her studies in the hope of becoming a teacher. She also finds herself falling in love with her college Professor, Rob Mc Coy. The possibility of romantic involvement poses complications due to Rob's reluctance to become involved with Niamh because of her younger age and his growing affection for a more suitable match, his colleague, Ms Brennan. After experiencing unrequited love and a heartbreaking split from Rob, Niamh decides to return home to visit her family and friends in Belfast. Niamh is also unaware that her long-time friend, Eamonn, is secretly in love with her. When in Belfast Niamh is drawn back into the political conflict, she joins Sinn Fein and becomes active in the political scene, but she always looks forward to the weekend getaways in the countryside with Eamonn, as these remind her of the more peaceful, and beautiful side of Ireland. When Eammon proposes marriage Niamh is hesitant, but finally she accepts his proposal. They both begin to plan a new start to their life together, but it is amidst a very dangerous and unpredictable future. Over the course of months to follow, Niamh begins to prepare for her upcoming wedding. With the help of her friends, Niamh arranges fun events and her maid of Honor, Mairead arrives from America to help out. During this time lots of relationships unfold, and dynamics intensify. This includes a very handsome, mysterious and alluring acquaintance of Mairead's from London whose name is Tom. Niamh finds herself "Uneasy" around him as he delicately throws hints of his attraction toward her. Niamh is totally committed to Eamonn and does not respond to Tom's overtures. Meanwhile in the political scene despite the I.R.A. Ceasefire the situation continues to remain volatile. When Niamh's wedding day finally arrives, she makes her way to meet her groom who waits for her at the Church. Tragically Eamonn is murdered outside the church by militants. Niamh is devastated, but with help from family and friends she regains her strength to keep going and after a year or so she decides to return to America and visit her good friend, Mairead. While Niamh is at the airport awaiting her flight to America something unusual happens, she runs into Tom on his way to London. They have a couple of drinks together, and a long conversation. Tom asks Niamh to promise she will have dinner with him sometime when she returns. Niamh's agrees and as she is walking to the gate to board her plane Tom comes running up and kisses her for the first time. Niamh is receptive to his kiss and at that moment she realizes that despite all the loss in her life, and all the pain, deep in her heart there is always hope, and given another chance maybe she could really learn to love again.
