Description

Told in rhyming verse, this picture book tells the story of three children on vacation in Mammoth Lakes, California amid their uncle's admonitions regarding Woolly Mammoths. Beautifully illustrated with a brief history and current highlights of the Eastern Sierra area and Woolly Mammoths, the children explore by biking and hiking through the mountainous environment. The message throughout is one of protecting and respecting our Earth. A bit of fact, a bit of fiction, and lots of fun. Intended for children ages 4 - 10.

Author Biography:

Mariah Clark Skewes, known in her real life as Mary Boyle, loves the out of doors. Whether running on trails, glamping in forests, travelling the world, or caring for her Southdown Babydoll Sheep and Great Pyrenees/Akbash dog, she loves being outside. Her four grown children were raised with many camping experiences, one of them now living in Mammoth Lakes, CA, the setting for this story. Mariah/Mary believes in the healing aspects of interaction with nature and in our responsibility to protect our earth. She has degrees in psychology and special education and worked in public schools as a teacher and administrator for many years. She and her husband live on a vineyard in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California where they grow wine grapes and raise honeybees. When not writing, Mariah/Mary enjoys volunteering as a CASA with children in the foster care system, competing in world marathons and travelling. Phoebe Cho is a talented illustrator who loves travel, surfing, biking, and collaborating on children's picture books.
