Description

My Pain Alert TM Scale Communication Tool is an introduction to pain management for the very young and for people with communication handicaps. Just as we train our small children to convey their bowel and bladder needs, we can train very young and limited communicators to clarify their pain relief needs. Forty years of speech therapy practice have been distilled to make this tool widely accessible. The degree of pain is divided into only five levels. The description relates each level to the limited communicator's own experiences. The levels are depicted by a person, not a symbol. The level for feeling better is above the most common pain experiences rather than at the end of the scale. The pictures are appealing and the activities can be fun. My Pain Alert TM Scale Communication Tool includes a quick method of recording detail about the individual at the time pain is experienced. Such a record can strengthen family-doctor teamwork needed to solve serious pain issues. Individuals can use: pointing at pictures, words, numbers, American Sign Language signs or specific sounds in response to descriptions, song verses, pictures, ASL signs or verbal cues. Standardized questions included in the Tools section of this book can facilitate research about the populations for which this book is intended. We hope this book helps each person who owns it.

Author Biography:

Gail has been a licensed Speech Language Pathologist for almost 40 years. Her early career included being tenured in public school systems in Illinois and Kentucky. She established the first hospital and nursing home practices in Madison County, Ky. She has provided therapy in preschool settings, adult day care, private school, home health and sheltered workshops. Her love of research, grounding in scientific method, and joy in creating customized materials for her therapy participants resulted in the following: - Personalized books preparing autistic adults for major surgery. The books taken to the hospital provided a basis for interaction between the patient and hospital staff members. Patient experiences underscored the need for pain management communication training. - A screening for stroke patients which did not require standard literacy. - A screening for auditory processing of children in grades K,1,3,5 normed on 170 children and incorporated into a system wide speech and language screening protocol used in the late 1970's in Fayette County Schools. - A proposal submitted to the National Institutes of Health and American Dental Fund for the norming and field testing of a speech and language screening for the dental office. (Fall 1984). - A presentation: "Factors Effecting Amount of Therapy for Dysphagia...a review of 300 consecutive cases," American Speech-Language-Hearing Association convention, November 1997, Boston MA and Kentucky Speech and Hearing Association, March 1997, Lexington, KY. Her last active caseload included adults with multiple handicaps. Taking an individual from control of three or four vowel sounds to getting needs met and opinions heard has been an awesome experience for Gail. Jan's career includes design, branding, and integrated marketing strategy with execution for projects requiring multiple channels. She thrives on attacking creative multi-level programs for Business to Business and Business to Consumer products and companies. She also enjoys planning and executing class reunions in the Chicago area. For this project Jan put on her illustration hat and created a simple character to set the message tone and help the reader and patient focus on their feelings and need for pain relief. Blair is the owner of Smiling Shamrock Photography. She also managed the food service for a large suburban hotel. For this project she used her instrumental music background to fine tune the song and used her photography expertise in planning a video version of this book. The project is near and dear to her heart because Blair has three young children one of whom has serious pain management issues. She gave first hand knowledge to this project and her son successfully tested the prototype.
