The increasing pace of everyday life, the progressive technization and urbanization of our surroundings, the degradation of the natural environment are increasingly the cause of our moods of alienation, loss or even danger in this "ever-better world." These moods trigger in us the desire to have at least a part of nature in our home. Hence the growing number of animals that we keep only for pleasure and company. The most often chosen species by us is PIES and you should not be surprised because it is the oldest animal friend of man. Domesticated about fifteen thousand years ago, we have served so far with great loyalty and devotion. Thanks to this, we are treated by us most often as another family member, and often as someone more. Because are we able to resist a wise and faithful look of a shaggy murder that 'understands' our problems, approves of our attitude, never criticizes us, and abolishes our bad moods with angel patience. In return, he only expects a friendly gesture, a bowl of food and basic care. Despite the long experience of human friendship with a dog, we are not always able to properly live with him and provide him with proper care. This is not the result of our bad will, and usually the insufficient knowledge we have about the maintenance and maintenance of this animal species. Not without significance is our large emotional involvement in relations with our dog, as a result of which we "humanize" him and his needs, which we often do to a friend and ourselves a lot of damage. It is impossible to replace reliable and professional knowledge with a huge heart and love. Several reasons caused that I decided to transfer my "dog" experience to paper. Firstly, repeating day by day 365 days a year, when a carer with a small patient comes in and starts calling "Doctor, this is my first dog and I do not know anything about dogs" or saying "Doctor, I did not know, I did not know." In such cases, I am overwhelmed by - and many of my fellow veterinarians - horror mixed up with surprise, because what can I pass on for several or even several dozen minutes of visit. Questions are born - what information and tips about a new family member are important, and less important, how much the owner will remember. The impulse to write this book was also the desire to polemic with some authors available on our market studies. Reading many publications makes me suspect that their authors are dog lovers - people with a big heart but minimal knowledge and experience. The reason, the most unpleasant, is the crowds of homeless people, deprived of all the care and rights of dogs that each of us encounters around us. They are most often sacrifices - I am not afraid to use this term - our objective treatment of the living creature, our lack of knowledge, the overestimation of our abilities. How often, as a result of the mounting difficulties and cooling our fascination with the dog, the only solution becomes at best a shelter for homeless animals or worse ... suburban walking sticks. Becoming the owner of a dog, without even the minimum amount of information about its maintenance, care, upbringing, nutrition or health, we act unwisely. We are condemning ourselves, in a way, to smaller - or even worse - bigger problems and failures associated with its breeding or health. In extreme cases, our ignorance and lack of skills may lead to a painful loss of a friend.
