Baxter Hero, an old, hard drinking, chain-smoking, homicide detective is up to his ears in suspects in a very gruesome murder. A womanizer becomes mincemeat for his killer. The only problem is, there are more than ten different people with unsubstantiated alibis and very good motives for wanting this person dead. The victim had a habit of finding, then living, with vulnerable women who had very healthy bank accounts. He would spend their life savings, then leave them penniless and broke. Not just financially, but also broken in spirit. He would then find another vulnerable and financially fit woman to smother in love and affection-until her funds were completely depleted. To make matters worse, another investigation within the department had top priority, so all of his findings were pushed to the back burner.
