"Most fun I've had from a video game in years"
5 stars"

I've just about clocked the game now after sinking many hours into it. It's safe to say the single player career mode is full of plenty of challenges and is satisfyingly long. The difficulty can be brutal at times, perhaps more so than you'd expect from an arcade title, but that added to the fun in my mind. I enjoyed pushing harder and harder to reach the perfect lap time or get that elusive top spot on the podium. You feel a real sense of progression in terms of your own abilities. I really liked that a lot of what the game had to offer had to be unlocked first in career mode before you could play with it in quick game mode. This was exactly what the original Moto Racer 1 was like. There's a real sense of achievement when you unlock something new after completing a challenge. I love that there's stars to earn as well as style medals to earn. The style medals give you points that you can use to upgrade your bikes and the stars allow you to unlock more chapters in the career, so there's yet more of a sense of achievement when you get those rewards. Each of the riders' bikes handle quite differently, and there are a few challenges that require you to use a specific rider, which means you'll end up having to be pretty good at using all of them. At first I wasn't sure I liked this, but it adds a fresh challenge to the mix – not just winning a race, or getting a good time but learning how a new rider's bike handles as well – and I came to appreciate it in the end. The game play itself takes some getting used to. The handling is quite twitchy and takes some practice before you'll get a good feel for it. The sense of speed at which the bikes move is incredible, and you'll need to get a good feel for each of the tracks to anticipate upcoming corners well in advance. Somewhat counter-intuitively, using the turbo button actually improves your handling, so it's often helpful to use it to help you pull yourself around a tight corner rather than going hard on the breaks. This means timing your turbos right so that you've got it available for that tough corner is crucial. Speaking of turbos, you should be using them as often as possible to be successful in the challenges, so practicing the timing of those is paramount. As you can see, there's a lot of practicing to do, and by the end of the game you really feel like you've accomplished something. It's nice that there's a little bonus at the end for those who complete everything, I won't spoil it for you though. One of my favourite parts of the game is that it has 2-player split screen play, something that's getting very rare in gaming nowadays. Some cons: If you're not into doing the practice and putting the time in to get better at it, I can see that you're likely to find the game frustrating rather than fun. The graphics are passable but nothing spectacular The biggest con, which isn't a failure of the game per se, is the total lack of online competitors, meaning that I haven't been able to play a single online race. If there was a bigger fan base for the game this wouldn't be a problem at all, but with so few people playing, the online component of the game is basically redundant which is a real shame.
