Description

Shelton tackles the fundamentals of motion media as communication devices. He focuses his narrative on communication principles that motivate audiences to achieve the show's goal. His inventive and personal approach merges history of the media, communication analysis, and filmic design with professional experiences from his award-winning career. Told from the vantage point of a seasoned motion-media communicator, Shelton forgoes discussions of technology, tools, and the like. Rather, he presents a cohesive strategy for the effective design and production of goal-achieving motion-media shows. Included are twenty-six illustrations from great documentary filmmakers. And, there are nine Appendices comprised of multimedia flow charts, a communication analysis form, several script formats, and a list of the all-time great documentary films.

Author Biography:

Captain S. Martin Shelton retired from active and reserve naval service. He served in the Korean and Vietnamese wars. He has an extensive background in Far Eastern studies. Shelton earned his Master of Arts Degree (Cinema) from the University of Southern California. He spent thirty years producing a host of information and documentary motion-media shows, winning over forty awards in national and international film competitions and festivals. Shelton is a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communications and of the Information Film Producers of America. Shelton has published extensively in trade magazines, peer-reviewed journals, and commercial publications. Currently, Shelton writes and publishes novels, novellas, short stories, and professional books. His professional book, Communicating Ideas with Film, Video, and Multimedia, garnered the Best of Show award in the Society for Technical Communication's Spotlight Publication Competition. Most of the time, his roman à clef narratives are based on historical incidents of the early twentieth century in the Far East and Africa. His novella Khartoum and his novel Abyssinia both earned Finalist awards in the Writer's League of Texas annual publication competition in 2013. His novel St. Catherine's Crown is set during the Russian Revolution, and involves the regicide of the royal family, and the harrowing post-Revolution adventures of Grand Duchess Anastasia and her cousin Lieutenant Kirik Pirogov along the Trans-Siberian Railroad and in northwestern China. A compilation of Shelton's literary work is posted on his blog. www.sheltoncomm.com and on Amazon.
