Goseffo Zarlino composed motets and secular works. He achieved significance as the leading music theoretician of the 16th century, having brought together and updated a rich body of ancient literature about music in view of the compositional principles of his own time. His extensive principal work “Istitutioni harmoniche” (1558) is based on the compositional technique of his teacher Adrian Willaert, out of which he developed a systematic, harmony-based key, counterpoint and fugue theory. After having sung madrigals and motets of Adrian Willaert, it was natural that Singer Pur should dedicate themselves to the music of Zarlino as well.
