Description

A young Indigenous water protector named Minnow goes on an underwater journey, learning from our ocean-living relatives. When she returns to the surface, she gathers her community to help make a change.  This story is told in lyrical rhyme and helps children gain a better respect for Indigenous water and land protectors, and the environment around them and helps show children activism at an early age.  We all come from Mother Earth, we all learn from her, and we all live from her.  Mother Earth has many children, not just humans. These children are all our relatives, including animals. This book focuses on our relationship with our ocean-living relatives and teaches us what we all must do to nurture and protect them. Medicine Wheel Publishing is committed to sharing diverse voices and perspectives, creating a platform for stories that celebrate Indigenous cultures and inspire understanding and respect among readers of all ages.

Author Biography:

Willie Poll is a Métis author from the Robinson Huron Treaty Territory (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada) and a proud member of the Metis Nation of Ontario. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous studies and a Master of Arts in archaeology. She grew up with a close relationship with her Metis grandpa who filled her with stories that connected her to her ancestors and culture. Willie has worked in Indigenous education across the Nation for over 10 years. Her stories are her feelings, emotions, and her tribute to the youth in her life. Willie currently resides on Prince Edward Island as a guest on the traditional lands of the Wabanaki and Mi'kma'ki people; however, she lives a nomadic lifestyle and has had the opportunity to be a guest in many places across Turtle Island.  Willie is currently working on a graphic novel series — there is much more of Minnow's unforgettable journey still to come! bailey macabre is an agender Cree, Métis and Ukrainian artist who is passionate about bright colours, Indigenous sovereignty, and identity; these themes are often at play within their works. bailey has experience working in a variety of mediums and dabbles in everything from sculpture and beadwork, illustration, and comic arts, to painting and sewing. They have been a published writer since 2006, working for various newspapers and magazines. When they are not working on commissions and illustrations, they are beading full-time and creating clothing, stickers, and accessories for their online shop. bailey currently lives on Snuneymuxw land in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada with their cats, dog, and husband. "By choosing not to capitalize my name, I aim to assert my place in this world as a nêhiyaw. In the dialect of plains cree, spoken where my family comes from, our language isn’t capitalized. Freeing myself from the rules imposed on us through the English language is one way I choose to subtly stand defiant in the face of colonization and forced assimilation."
