Description

Metamaterials-by-Design: Theory, Technologies, and Vision is devoted to a comprehensive review of the latest advancements and current trends in the field of system-level-oriented metamaterial design methods, technologies, and future perspectives. Starting from the theoretical and methodological motivations of this research and covering macro-scale performance-driven design of volumetric and planar metamaterials, the book introduces advanced task-oriented modeling approaches. The approaches discussed include specific reference to their multi-scale / multi-physics customization in recent metamaterial science and engineering. In the introduction of these concepts there is particular attention paid to the illustration of the physical mechanisms and phenomena at the basis of the field manipulation capabilities enabled by metamaterials. Then, a wide set of recent application examples in microwave, terahertz, photonics, and optics scenarios is reviewed, highlighting the logical and methodological interconnections among the different domains. For example, contributions from industry and academic perspectives on active and passive metamaterial-enhanced devices for communications and sensing are included. The final part of the volume is aimed at providing a perspective regarding the current trends, future research, and application tracks in system-performance-driven metamaterial design methodologies and technologies, included potential applications in future reconfigurable and cognitive materials. Metamaterials-by-Design is suitable for researchers and engineers in academia and R&D in industry working in materials science, engineering, and related applications areas.

Author Biography:

Andrea Alù is the Founding Director and Einstein Professor at the Photonics Initiative, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, St Nicholas Terrace, NY, USA. He received his Laurea (2001) and PhD (2007) from the University of Roma Tre, Italy, and, after a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, where he was the Temple Foundation Endowed Professor until 2018. His research interests span over metamaterials, plasmonics, nano-optics, electromagnetics and acoustics. Dr. Alù is a Fellow of NAI, IEEE, AAAS, OSA, SPIE and APS, and has received several scientific awards, including the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship from DoD, the ICO Prize in Optics, the NSF Alan T. Waterman award, the OSA Adolph Lomb Medal, and the URSI Issac Koga Gold Medal. Dr. Nader Engheta is the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He received the BS degree (with highest rank) in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran, the MS degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (with a minor in physics) both from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). After spending one year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Caltech and four years as a Senior Research Scientist at Kaman Sciences Corporation's Dikewood Division in Santa Monica, CA, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, where he rose through the ranks and is currently H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering. He is also a member of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds secondary appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Pennsylvania. He was the graduate group chair of electrical engineering from July 1993 to June 1997. Andrea Massa is a Professor in Electromagnetic Fields at the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering, University of Trento, Italy, and Director of the network of federated laboratories “ELEDIA Research Center” located in Brunei, China, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Peru, Tunisia, and USA with more than 150 researchers. Dr. Giacomo Oliveri is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento, Trento, Italy and a Board Member of the ELEDIA Research Center. His research work is mainly focused on electromagnetic direct and inverse problems, system-by-design and metamaterials, and antenna array synthesis.
