Author Biography

Heinrich von Maltzan wurde am 6. September 1826 in Dresden1826 und starb am 22. Februar 1874 in Pisa. Er war ein deutscher Forschungsreisender, Ethnograph, Sprachforscher und Reiseschriftsteller. 1860 unternahm er als Muslim getarnt eine Pilgerfahrt nach Mekka. Als Tarnung diente ein Pa, den sich Maltzan durch Bestechung eines algerischen Arabers besorgt hatte. Dieses Vorgehen war notwendig, weil der Besuch der heiligen Stadt des Islam fur Nichtmuslime bei Todesstrafe verboten war und ist. Nach dem Tod des offiziellen Passbesitzers veroffentlichte Maltzan 1865 einen Bericht uber diese Reise.
