Medication Administration: A Guide for Unregulated Care Providers. Personal Support Workers and unregulated caregivers in the community settings have been given the responsibility to assist with the administration, receiving, dispensing and storing of oral, sublingual, topical rectal and inhalation medications. UCPs/PSWs may assist and ensure that their clients are taking their medications as prescribed by their health care professionals in order to maintain their clients' safety, care, welfare and security. This guide will assist PSWs and UCPs in proficiently managing the task of medication administration and will cover the following three modules: Module 1: Enhancing Medication Safety in the Community Objectives: > to provide an overview of medication safety in the community setting > to discuss the role of PSWs/UCPs in medication administration in the community > Present some general knowledge related to medicine > Inform caregivers about safe use issues, practices and resources > Discuss strategies to preventing medication errors Module 2: Medication Administration: The Role of the PSW/UCP Objectives: > PSWs/UCPs will learn about the 10 Rights of Medication Administration > Discuss the medication administration techniques of the following medication routes: skin, ear, eyes, nose, vaginal, inhalation therapy, oral and subcutaneous injections > Learn how to read medication labels > Learn how to recognize medications and when they should be used > Learn the importance of record keeping Module 3: Insulin Administration & Diabetes Mellitus Objectives: > Discuss the role of PSWs/UCPs in administering parenteral medications in the community > Learn about subcutaneous injection techniques > Learn about the different types of insulin > Discuss the role of the PSW in managing signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus in the community setting

Author Biography:

Rejeev is the founder and President of Peak Excellence Centre for Continuing Education Inc. He provides quality leadership and oversees the management of the operations and employees of the company. Through the planning, implementation and evaluation of strategies, programs and policies, Rajeev has managed to enhance the company's credibility and surpass accreditation standards. Rajeev has been a practicing clinical and emergency-room nurse for over ten years and has also taught in Nursing at several private and community colleges in Toronto, Ontario. He has a Masters Degree in Nursing in the Administration and Education streams and currently works in Nursing Administration at a Toronto-based hospital. He has also facilitated numerous trainings and workshops in Mental Health First Aid and Medication Safety throughout the Province of Ontario. As an educator, Rajeev has enabled his students to bridge the gaps in their learning by integrating classroom theory into their clinical practice. Rajeev's wealth of knowledge and professional expertise has fostered a positive learning experience with his participants. In his spare time, Rajeev enjoys spending time with his family, swimming and reading. Richel is the co-founder and Vice-President of Peak Excellence Centre for Continuing Education Inc. She is responsible for formulating and implementing the organization`s strategic plans and overseeing its operational performance. She is actively engaged in various mental health and community health and wellness initiatives, particularly working with clients experiencing dementia and substance abuse. Richel has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and attended a Master's program specializing in Medical-Surgical Nursing. She believes that this book will contribute towards maintaining awareness and improving the quality of care standards for unregulated healthcare providers administering medications in the community. Richel spends her spare time in creative works such as baking, photography, canvas painting, candle and soap making.
