Author Biography:

John R. Schermerhorn Jr is the Charles G. O'Blenessprofessor of management emeritus in the College of Business at OhioUniversity. John earned a PhD in organisational behaviour fromNorthwestern University, an MBA (with distinction) in managementand international business from New York University, and a BS inbusiness administration from the State University of New York atBuffalo. He previously taught at Tulane University, the Universityof Vermont, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, wherehe also served as head of the Department of Management andassociate dean of the College of Business Administration. Management educators and students alike know John as the author ofseveral leading international textbooks, including ExploringManagement and Management 10th edition, and as a senior co-authorof Organizational Behavior 10th edition and Core Concepts ofOrganizational Behavior. John has also published numerous articlesin leading management journals and is a member of the Academy ofManagement. Paul Davidson is deputy director of the ProjectManagement Academy at the Queensland University of Technology. He has 30 years universityteaching experience and more than 100 academic publications, including nine books, to his credit. He has studied and taught atthe University of Queensland, the University of Birmingham, theUniversity of Geneva, the University of Otago, Stanford Universityand Southern Cross University. He has degrees in science(psychology), theology and business administration. In addition, Paul has also consulted and taught nationally and internationallyto both public and private sector organisations, including theSheraton Hotel Group in Asia, Royal Dutch Shell in The Netherlandsand the United States, and extensively to the Royal AustralianNavy, in Sydney. He has been a visiting professor in management atReims Management School in France, Jyväskylä Polytechnicin Finland, Euromed Marseille in France and at the University ofTexas in the United States. His doctoral research was in the area of management education anddevelopment, and his current research interests are in thedevelopment of management competencies and international humanresource management, and in project management. Prior to hisacademic career, Paul was an offi cer in the Royal Australian AirForce and a clinical psychologist. Between academic appointments, he has been chief executive offi cer of a company with some 650employees. He was a state councillor (1994-2007) andpresident (2000-05) of the Australian Human ResourcesInstitute in Queensland, and chairman of its National AccreditationCommittee (2004-10), as well as being a fellow of theAustralian Human Resources Institute. He is also a fellow of theAustralian Institute of Company Directors. David Poole is a lecturer in the Department of Businessat Macquarie University. Prior to this appointment, he owned aretail business, served as chief executive offi cer of an industryassociation and worked as a senior lecturer in management at theUniversity of Western Sydney. He has also worked as an adjunctlecturer at business schools in Australia, China and the UnitedStates, and taught in Vietnam and Hong Kong. David has a BBus, MBA, MEdAdmin and PhD. His research interestsinclude public sector management, university management, organisational behaviour and business strategy. David'sresearch has been published in journals including Management Today, Leading and Managing, Higher Education and the InternationalJournal of Public Sector Management. He has co-authored severalpopular management texts and is currently working on a book aboutthe lessons to be learnt from some of the world's businessand political leaders, entertainers and sports identities followingtimes of failure and disappointment. He is also a member of theNational Executive of the Australian and New Zealand Academy ofManagement. Alan Simon is an associate professor in management in theUniversity of Western Australia's Business School. Hehas nearly 30 years university teaching experience and more than70 publications to his credit, including several books andmonographs. He teaches introductory management (for which he won anExcellence in Teaching Award in 2007), managing organisationalchange, strategic capabilities and organisational success, andbusiness research methods at the University of Western Australia.His doctorate was awarded by Rhodes University and in it hedeveloped a new method for conducting research. Alan has consulted widely to industry and government and he workedand consulted for the P&S Business Consulting Group inMelbourne for many years. He has also delivered several shortcourses on management, both in Australia and overseas. His clientlist, to name a few, includes the Australian Institute ofManagement, Comcater, Barclays Bank, Lend Lease, Pioneer Concreteand Holden's Engine Company. He is a member of the Australianand New Zealand Academy of Management and the British Academy ofManagement. He has played and coached cricket, played rugby union and stillplays competition squash. He is also a boating enthusiast, holdingan offshore skipper's ticket. Peter Woods is a lecturer in the Department ofInternational Business and Asian Studies, Griffith UniversityBusiness School. He has won a number of Griffi th Universityteaching awards and was part of the team that won an award at theAustralian Awards for University Teaching for the ExcelLintercultural skills training program. Peter has also served asacademic fellow at the Griffi th Institute of Higher Education, helping academic staff to improve teaching in the multiculturalclassroom. He specialises in teaching introductory management, international human resource management and strategicmanagement. Peter has provided training and management consultation to a numberof organisations, including Queensland Rail, the Australian AirForce Cadets, BHP Billiton, the Queensland Premier'sDepartment and Teen Challenge Queensland. Before joining Griffi thUniversity, Peter worked for a number of years helping to establishthe Multicultural Community Centre in Brisbane's FortitudeValley. He played an important role in establishing the Asia Pacific Institute, a college specifi cally aimed at training students inmulticultural church ministry. Prior to this, he worked at a numberof hospitals as a supervising medical social worker, specialisingin rehabilitation and aged care. Peter is a member of the Academyof Management, the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Managementand the Australian Human Resources Institute. Peter received his PhD in 2007 after researching'Cross-Cultural Performance Management in the ExpatriateContext'. His research interests include cross-culturalmanagement, Chinese leadership, performance management, diversitymanagement and teaching in the multicultural context. He isconversant in Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia and has more than 20academic publications to his credit. So Ling Chau is a senior lecturer and director ofthe Business Administration Program at the Hang Seng School ofCommerce in Hong Kong. She has more than 15 years teachingexperience, including in-house training and teaching in otheruniversities and educational institutions. She specialises inteaching business administration, human resource management, management fundamentals and organisational behaviour. So Ling completed her doctoral degree in organisational learningand was a Best Doctoral Paper Award Finalist at an Asia Academy ofManagement Conference. Her research interests includeorganisational learning, knowledge management and organisationalbehaviour. So Ling's articles on management and learningcapabilities have been published in academic journals andmagazines. She is a co-author of several management textbooks andis currently also serving as a reviewer for some academicjournals.
