Description

Making Good Communicators completes a quartet of resource books for teachers, teaching assistant and speech and language therapists. This resource offers activities which promote the specific areas of communication that underpin all areas of learning, including emotional literacy. By the upper end of Key Stage 2 it is assumed that children will have developed competence in effective communication. However it is now recognised that many children need targeted help to develop these skills. This sourcebook covers the key areas outlined in the Spoken Language National Curriculum. It offers practitioners easy access to a range of activities that can be used in a variety of settings, eg whole class, large or small group or pairs.

Author Biography:

Catherine Delamain began her speech therapy career in an audiology unit where she became interested in specific language disorder, and spent a year in the United States studying the differential diagnosis of SLI. Throughout her career she worked closely with colleagues in early years education, and in both mainstream and special schools. She was instrumental in the setting up of a special needs nursery, and dedicated speech and language bases in mainstream schools. Her last post was team leader for education in a large Speech and Language Therapy Service, where she also formed part of the autism diagnostic team. After partial retirement, she collaborated with a Senior Educational Psychologist in setting up and delivering a rolling programme of training in first and primary schools. This aimed to help teachers give effective support to children with speech, language and communication needs. She is now fully retired. Jill Spring is a speech and language therapist who specialised in child speech and language disorder and autism spectrum conditions. Since qualifying in 1972 she worked in a variety of paediatric settings including community clinics, assessment centres, opportunity playgroups and mainstream schools. Before retiring in January 2016 she was responsible for coordinating the specialist Speech & Language Therapy support service for children with complex speech, language and communication difficulties commissioned by the local authority. She also worked as part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for assessment and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders in West Dorset. From September 2011 until her retirement she coordinated the Speech & Language Therapy Service training programmes offered to schools across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole. She maintains an active interest in speech, language and communication development in children and young people.
